Using Skype for church services and meetings

We are using the Skype computer system to attend services and meetings from home. All you need to take part is a computer, smartphone or tablet that is connected to the internet.

Do I need to have a Skype account?

You only need an account if you are going to start your own meeting or if you are joining using a phone. If you are using a tablet such as an iPad, or a computer (laptop or desktop) you don’t need an account. See below for instructions on setting up a free Skype account.

How do I join a service or meeting – tablets and computers?

Go to the church website, www.nschurch.org.uk a couple of minutes before the service or meeting time – on the home page there will be instructions to join the next service or meeting, something like this (do not use this specific link – use the current one on the website):

Click on the link. You will see a screen like this:

Click where it says ‘Join as a guest’. You will be asked to type in your name – then click ‘Join the conversation’. Finally click ‘Join call’. (If you can't see 'Join as a guest' on a tablet, use the instructions for phone below.)

You may be asked if Skype can use your microphone or video – click to allow this. You should now be able to see and speak with other people in the meeting or service. You may later be asked to turn your video or sound off - see instructions below. When you want to leave, just click the red ‘hang up’ button:

Click ‘Download Skype’ to download it from the App Store/Google Play. Start the Skype app and at the Sign in page choose ‘No account? Create one!’ and fill in a few details to get an account. You may have to click the link again to get into the service/meeting after signing in.

Once you have the Skype app and account, next time you click on one of our links it should take you straight into the app. You may be asked to type in your name. Finally click ‘Join call’.

Should I use video?

If you don’t want to be seen there is no need to have your video on, but it does help others to feel that we are all meeting together in fellowship.

You can turn video on and off with the button showing a little video camera. If it looks like this:

the video is off and clicking the button will turn the camera on. If it looks like this:

the video is on and clicking the button will turn the video off.

If you can’t see a button on a computer, move the mouse (touch the screen on a phone/tablet) and it will appear.

How do I turn my microphone off (or on)?

We recommend you have your microphone turned on for sections of a service with responses or meetings, but turn it off during listening sections like a sermon.

You can turn the microphone on and off with the button showing a little microphone. If it looks like this:

the microphone is off and clicking the button will turn it on. If it looks like this:

the microphone is on and clicking the button will turn it off.

If you can’t see a button on a computer, move the mouse (touch the screen on a phone/tablet) and it will appear.

How do I make sure I can see the person who is speaking?

Skype has two ways you can see other people. In ‘Grid view’ you will see up to four others in rectangular boxes in the middle of the screen and everyone else in little circles at the top. In ‘Speaker view’ you will just see the person who is speaking on the main screen with everyone else in little circles. We recommend you use Grid view for meetings and Speaker view for services – but feel free to try either.

To switch views on a computer:
1) Click the Switch view button at the top of the screen, towards the right (you may need to move the mouse to see this):

2) Select either Grid view or Speaker view from the menu

To switch views on a phone or tablet (you may need to touch the screen to see the button):
1) Tap the Grid view button to switch to Speaker view:

2) Tap the Speaker view button to switch to Grid view:

How do I get subtitles?

If the sound is bad you can turn on subtitles. Click the '...' in the bottom right of the screen (you may need to move the mouse to see this) and choose to turn on subtitles from the menu that pops up. If you see a prompt in the top left asking you to select a language, click the little arrow by it and select UK English.

Can I use this link to talk to my friends and family?

You can’t use the link from the Church website to do this. But you can use Skype to contact others as long as you have the Skype app and a Skype account. Go into Skype. On a computer click on the Meet Now button. On a phone or tablet, tap ‘Calls’, then tap the video icon:
at the top of the screen and click Continue to be led through creating your own link.

How do I get a Skype account?

You don’t need an account to join a meeting or service unless you are using a phone – but if you want one (to use a phone or set up your own calls), it’s easy and free. Just go to www.skype.com and follow the onscreen instructions to set up an account.
