Enjoy singing some carols in preparation for Christmas

We won't be able to sing carols in church this Christmas. It's something many of us look forward to, so we are going to record congregational carols and a choir carol with your help. These will be used at the carol service and throughout the Christmas season - we'd love to get as many voices as possible. If your children know some of the carols, we'd love to hear them too!

There's no need to do them all - record as many or as few as you like (see below for how to do this - you need a smartphone and a computer or other device you can listen to music from the internet on with headphones or earphones). We've got all November to do it, so you don't have to do them all at once. Please get any recordings to Brian at brian@brianclegg.net by Monday 30 November at the latest, but feel free to send them sooner if you have them.

The congregational carols are all old favourites:

  • Away in a Manger
  • Hark the Herald Angels Sing
  • O Come All Ye Faithful
  • O Little Town of Bethlehem
  • Once in Royal David's City
  • Silent Night
  • While Shepherds Watched Their Flocks by Night
For those of you who sing in choirs or would like to join our scratch Christmas choir, we are also doing the beautiful Adam Lay Ybounden. Please read the performance notes in the folder before making a recording.

You'll find all the carols here online - click each folder in turn to get the specific carol.

If you need any help, just drop Brian an email at brian@brianclegg.net

How to record
  • Sing along a couple of times to the accompaniment, until you feel comfortable with it.
  • Use headphones or earbuds to hear the accompaniment while you record (you may have to play the accompaniment on a separate device to the one you are recording on) - otherwise the accompaniment will record too loud in the background
  • Record yourself singing (here’s how below - you may also be able to record from your computer if it has a microphone)
  • If you have an iPhone, run the Voice Memos app
  • Record by pressing the round red button (the microphone is at the bottom of the phone)
  • Stop the recording by pressing the square red button
  • Re-record if you went wrong
  • Send it to us - the easiest way is to select the three dots ... button next to the piece you've recorded, then Share, choose your email (Mail) and email it to brian@brianclegg.net.
  • If you have an Android phone, run your voice recorder app (if you don’t have one pre-installed you can download one in the Play store)
  • Record by pressing the round red button (the microphone is at the bottom of the phone)
  • Stop the recording by pressing the square grey/black button
  • Re-record if you went wrong
  • Send it to us - the easiest way is to select the three dots ... button at the top of the screen then Share, choose your email and email it to brian@brianclegg.net
If you can't email from your phone, you can use the same Share method to get the recording into Facebook Messenger or another communications app and send it to yourself, then pick it up on a computer.
